SUMMARY:Etude des mécanismes de dégradation induite par la lumière dans les matériaux pérovskites hybrides
DESCRIPTION:Jérémy HIEULLE\, IS2M\nMa thématique principale concerne l’étude des mécanismes de dégradation induite par la lumière dans les matériaux pérovskites hybrides\, en lien avec leurs applications en photovoltaïque. Ces travaux visent à mieux comprendre les phénomènes de ségrégation de phase\, de défauts et de recombinaison\, afin d’améliorer la stabilité et les performances des dispositifs. Pour cela\, j’utilise notamment des approches de microscopie corrélative (CL\, PL\, SEM) permettant d’établir des corrélations entre propriétés optiques\, structurelles et électroniques à l’échelle micro- et nanométrique. L’utilisation de la spectroscopie de photoémission par rayon-X (XPS)\, me permet également d’étudier la décomposition chimique des matériaux Pérovskite sous illumination [1-2]. \nMa thématique de recherche secondaire porte sur la synthèse de surface de dérivés organiques proches du graphène\, présentant des propriétés électroniques et magnétiques originales. Ces systèmes offrent des perspectives intéressantes pour le développement de matériaux fonctionnels à l’échelle nanométrique [3-4]. SUMMARY:Nanoparticles for biomedical applications : Biological interactions and protein corona
DESCRIPTION:Lionel Maurizi\, IS2M \nDue to their structure\, size\, and chemical composition\, nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit intrinsic properties that make them particularly attractive for applications in nanomedicine. Their nanoscale dimensions enable interactions with biological systems\, typically through injection or direct contact\, which also raises important concerns regarding nanomaterial-induced toxicity. For these applications\, NPs are often engineered through surface functionalization with polymers\, biomolecules\, or core–shell architectures to enhance their interactions with biological environments. Such modifications can improve colloidal stability\, immune evasion\, and targeting efficiency. Importantly\, surface chemistry plays a central role in governing biological responses\, which may be either beneficial or detrimental depending on the context. \nThroughout my research projects\, collaborations\, and supervisory activities\, my work focuses on the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles\, primarily based on metals and metal oxides (e.g. gold\, iron oxide …)\, exhibiting innovative physicochemical properties for the development of theranostic nanovectors. To optimize their performance and adaptability within biological environments\, these NPs are systematically surface-functionalized with relevant organic molecules. The resulting nanohybrids are subsequently evaluated in nanomedicine-related contexts\, including medical imaging\, cellular biology\, and interactions at the bio–nano interface\, particularly with biological fluids and proteins. \nTwo main research objectives have emerged\, structuring my scientific approach to nanomedicine: \n\n\nTo design NP synthesis strategies that meet biological constraints. Materials science should not constitute a limiting factor in the development of nanomedicine. \n\n\n To elucidate protein adsorption phenomena at the bio-nano interface in biological fluids\, which represent a critical parameter for controlling NP biological identity and fate.

SUMMARY:Magnetotactic Bacteria as a Source of Biogenic Magnetosomes for Biomedical Applications
DESCRIPTION:Eliane BOU ORM\, IS2M\nMes travaux de recherche se situent à l’interface entre microbiologie\, biotechnologie et science des matériaux. Je m’intéresse en particulier aux bactéries magnétotactiques\, des micro-organismes capables de biosynthétiser des nanoparticules magnétiques intracellulaires appelées magnétosomes. Ces nanoparticules présentent des propriétés physico-chimiques originales et contrôlées\, ce qui en fait des objets d’intérêt pour des applications biomédicales\,notamment en imagerie et en hyperthermie magnétique\, ainsi que pour d’autres applications potentielles en lien avec les matériaux fonctionnels.Mes recherches portent plus spécifiquement sur l’optimisation des conditions de culture bactérienne et de production des magnétosomes\, le développement de protocoles d’extraction et de purification reproductibles\, la caractérisation physico-chimique de ces nanoparticules\, et l’étude de leurs interactions avec des systèmes biologiques\, en particulier des cellules humaines.\nPlus largement\, mes thématiques s’inscrivent dans une démarche pluridisciplinaire autour des interactions entre micro-organismes\, environnement et matériaux\, avec pour objectif de mieux comprendre\, maîtriser et valoriser des systèmes biologiques d’intérêt en biotechnologie et en santé.

SUMMARY:Nanoscale solid-liquid interfaces: Carbon nanomaterials in all its forms
DESCRIPTION:Tristan Petit\, IS2M\nInterfaces at the nanoscale\, also called nanointerfaces\, play a fundamental role in physics and chemistry. Probing the chemical and electronic environment at nanointerfaces is essential to elucidate chemical processes relevant for applications in a variety of fields. My research topics are mostly related to the understanding of physicochemical processes occurring at the solid-liquid interface with carbon\, carbide and carbonitride materials. To achieve this aim\, I developed new methods to characterize these interfaces with optical and soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques. In this presentation\, I will present some representative studies of my research work based on the different classes of nanomaterials that I have investigated in the contextof applications in energy storage and conversion.\nI will most specifically detail recent work related to 2D transition metal carbides\, so- called MXenes. Their layered structure with a tunable surface chemistry and conductive core provide them with pseudocapacitive properties ideally suited for electrochemical energy storage. Future challenges related to their synthesis and application to sodium ion battery will be highlighted. \n

By introducing gaseous or vapor probes to a solid sorbent\, researchers can gain deep insights into both surface interactions and bulk phenomena. While several methodologies exist\, the three primary pillars of the field\, volumetric\, gravimetric\, and chromatographic\, each offer unique diagnostic strengths. \nGravimetric techniques\, such as Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS)\, are prized for their high sensitivity and ease of hybridization with other analytical tools\, allowing for the precise measurement of minute sorption events on small sample masses. Conversely\, chromatographic methods\, like Breakthrough Analysis (BTA)\, provide industrially relevant data by simulating « real-world » flow conditions through packed beds to measure multi-component competitive sorption. Furthermore\, Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) serves as a powerful tool for mapping surface energy\, functionality\, and specific surface area—metrics that are often the primary drivers of material performance and formulation stability. \nRecognizing that no single method is exhaustive\, this presentation advocates for a complementary\, multi-technique approach. We will explore the synergy of these methods through a series of diverse case studies\, including: \n\n\nPharmaceutical Characterization: Utilizing DVS hyphenated with Raman or NIR spectroscopy to monitor phase transitions. \n\n\nEnvironmental Remediation: Capturing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) using DVS\, DVS Vacuum\, and BTA to evaluate sorbent efficiency. \n\n\nSustainability & Carbon Capture: Assessing novel carbon-capture materials through specialized DVS Carbon and BTA protocols. \n\n\nInterfacial Science: Applying IGC to quantify surface energy and its impact on material processing. \n\n\nThrough these examples\, we demonstrate how integrating disparate sorption data provides a holistic understanding of materials across the pharmaceutical\, polymer\, and porous media industries.

SUMMARY:Thermoplasmonic Heat Control & Hybrid Nanoparticles
DESCRIPTION:  \nCéline Molinaro IS2M – PHOTON \nMetallic nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit unique properties derived from their plasmonic behavior. When illuminated under specific conditions\, these NPs host localized surface plasmons\, inducing a collective oscillation of electrons at the metal-dielectric interface. This phenomenon gives rise to three effects: local field enhancement\, hot electron/hole pair generation\, and heat production. \nMy research focuses on the latter effect\, thermoplasmonic heat generation\, by leveraging thermal polymers to map the temperature of NPs upon illumination\, both at the millimetric [1] and nanometric scales [2\,3] (see figure above). Here\, the polymer serves a dual role\, enabling both temperature cartography and the formation of hybrid NPs. \nReferences \n1. C. SUMMARY:Romain Barbet: Institut de Recherche en Hématologie et Transplantation (Mulhouse)
DESCRIPTION:Romain Barbet is coming to visit us on January 9th. He is the head of the IRHT (Institut de Recherche en Hématologie et Transplantation) in Mulhouse.\nHe will present an overview of their current research and the tools they are developing.\nBelow is a short description of the IRHT. \nThe IRHT in Mulhouse is an independent biomedical research institute located inside Hasenrain Hospital and dedicated to hematology\, transplantation and cancer research\, with a long‑standing expertise in stem cells.  It was founded in 1987 by hematologist Philippe Hénon and is managed as a non‑profit association recognized as being of public interest\, with a small permanent team and many national and international collaborations.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] \n## Mission and general focus \nIRHT’s overall goal is to develop new cell‑based therapies for blood diseases\, cancers and severe tissue damage\, particularly of the heart\, using stem cells and transplantation approaches.  The institute combines fundamental research on stem cell biology with translational and clinical projects\, so that discoveries in the lab can be tested and eventually used in patients from the surrounding region.[2][3][8][6][9][10] \n## Adult and blood stem cell research \nA central activity is the study of adult stem cells\, especially blood‑derived CD34+ cells\, to understand how they behave in normal conditions\, how they transform into leukemic cells\, and how they can be used therapeutically.  IRHT was one of the pioneers showing that purified blood stem cells could regenerate damaged heart muscle after myocardial infarction\, which led to early clinical proof‑of‑concept studies and later to the creation of the spin‑off company CellProthera.[11][5][9][10][12][2] \n## Very small embryonic‑like stem cells and regenerative medicine \nAnother major line of research concerns so‑called very small embryonic‑like stem cells (VSELs)\, rare cells in the adult organism that share properties with embryonic stem cells but can be obtained without destroying embryos.  These cells are investigated as a basis for regenerative medicine\, with clinical work in areas such as myocardial infarction and diabetes\, aiming to repair tissues like the heart or pancreas using ethically acceptable stem‑cell sources.[13][2][11] \n## Leukemia\, cancer and new axes (e.g. brain tumors) \nIRHT also studies how normal stem cells become leukemic\, focusing on mechanisms of transformation that may lead to better diagnostics or targeted therapies for blood cancers.  More recently\, the institute has opened a research axis on brain cancers\, alongside its historical work on hematological malignancies and transplantation\, expanding its cancer‑oriented projects.[14][9][12][2][13] \n## Local integration and collaborations \nThe institute is physically embedded in the Mulhouse hospital and maintains close links with clinical departments\, which facilitates access to patients and samples for translational research.  It collaborates with universities and research teams in France and abroad—including partners in Paris\, the Netherlands\, Germany\, Israel\, North America—and has a formal cooperation framework with the University of Haute‑Alsace for research\, teaching and scientific outreach.

SUMMARY:Revolutionizing Bone Tissue Regeneration: Innovations in Nanostructured 3D-Printed Biomaterials for Personalized Healing and Anti-Senescence Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Iman Roohani\, Zufu Lu\, Shunning Wang\, Yiran Zhang\, Hala Zreiqat \nBiomaterials and Tissue Engineering Unit\, University of Sydney\, Sydney Austral \n The growing clinical need for synthetics that specifically enhance the repair of critical large bone defects and aged bone matched by the escalating demand for grafts\, is driven largely by an ageing population whose natural regenerative responses are impaired. This presentation will describe the following: 1) our strategies in developing a platform of patented engineered nanostructured\, 3D-printed biomaterials for cell-free personalised treatment to promoting bone healing in load bearing challenging situations. 2) our unique fabrication strategies that will enable customisation of the implant’s shape\, size\, structure and architecture to meet patient-specific requirements (Fig 1)\, 3) Identification of the composition of bioceramics that achieves antibacterial effects 4) Our anti-senescence biomaterial approach for enhanced regeneration of aged bone. The role of cellular senescence will greatly contribute to the development of novel and effective therapeutic interventions for bone tissue repair and regeneration. Our technologies open avenues for skeletal and soft tissue regeneration in various clinical applications.  \n\nProf. Zreiqat’s contribution to regenerative medicine and orthopaedic research has led to a number of national and international awards\, including being named a Member of the Order of Australia (2019)\, 2021-2022 Fulbright Senior Scholar; Laureate for the TAKREEM Foundation 2022 “Scientific & Technological Achievement”;  the 2018 New South Wales Premier’s Woman of the Year\, the King Abdullah II Order of Distinction of the Second Class (2018)\, Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University (2016-2017); Eureka Prize winner for Innovative Use of Technology (2019); and University of Sydney Payne-Scott Professorial Distinction (2019). She is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences (2021); the Australian Academy of Technology & Engineering (2020)\, the International Association of Advanced Materials (2022)\, the Royal Society of New South Wales (2019); Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2019)\, and the International Orthopaedic Research Society (2019). She is the past president of the Australian & New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society. She was the Director of the Australian Research Council Training Centre for Innovative BioEngineering (2017-2022) and a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow (2006-2020). She is the Chair of the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR) (2020-2023); an Associate of the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University and an Honorary Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.\nProf. Zreiqat has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications with over 10\,000 citations. Her research in the field of musculoskeletal disorders and biomaterials research has led to four awarded and four provisional patents and more than $20.5M in competitive funding\, including major grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council\, Australian Research Council and the New South Wales Medical Devices Fund.\nAs well as her pioneering work in biomaterials development\, Prof. Zreiqat is committed to improving opportunities for women and young scientists around the world. She is the founder and Chair of the BIOTech Futures\, a science and engineering mentorship program for high school students. \n

Please find below the abstract of the talk.\nYou can have a look at her last paper here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-30488-0\n\n\nAdherent cells in vivo often reside on extracellular matrices (ECMs) that possess a topographical organization at different scales. Various types of engineered microstructured substrates have been developed to study the impact of basal topographical cues on cell behavior in vitro. Amongst them\, microgrooves mimicking the anisotropic organization of the ECM have been shown to align and elongate different cell types. However\, how cells detect and respond to microgrooves remains unclear\, particularly for cellular monolayers. We are investigating these questions using vascular endothelial cells (ECs)\, which form a monolayer lining the inner surfaces of blood vessels\, as a model. \nIn the first part of this presentation\, I will focus on the collective migration of vascular endothelial cell monolayers on microgrooved substrates. We describe the emergence of a specific pattern of collective motion characterized by large antiparallel cell streams\, which can be predicted in the physical framework of active fluids. I will then address the cellular and subcellular mechanisms underlying the contact guidance response of vascular endothelial cells on the microgrooves. We have in particular highlighted distinct regimes and mechanisms of response to topography in single cells vs. monolayers. Finally\, I will present some preliminary results on the deformation of cell nuclei on microgrooved substrates. We have characterized the cellular mechanisms leading to nuclear deformations in the grooves and investigated the links between nuclear deformations and mechanics. We believe that microgrooves constitute a new\, simple and high-throughput system to study cell and nuclear mechanics in physiological and/or pathological settings.

Pauli\, one of the founding fathers of quantum physics\, about crystals is well known to all scientists who are interested in the mechanisms / properties revealed on the surface of amaterial. What would he have told us about a material which is only a surface and has the thickness of an atom? This is the case of graphene and many other 2D materials\, in contrast to 3D bulk systems\, and which can be combined on top of eachother by stacking. In this IS2M annual meeting on 2D Materials\, we aim to have a broad multidisciplinary approach in physics\, chemistry and material science to explore the state of art 18 years after the discovery of graphene. We wish to investigate 2D layers made of graphene – and other materials –\, combined with systems exhibiting another dimensionality (0D\, 1D\, …) in so-called Van der Waals heterostructures\, but also functionalized by different methods\, and present their potential applications. Zorpas\,  Associate Professor at Cyprus Open University and Head of the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Engineering\, Sustainability\, invited by the TRM2P group\, will give  a talk entitled:  \nCircular Economy strategy in a changing world. \nAbstract: Circular Economy seen as a new business model expected to lead to a more sustainable development and a harmonious society. Through the liner model of “take\, make and disposed” huge quantities of waste were produced affecting in a negative way the environment. Several communities did not have any Strategic Planning in place focuses on waste management\, waste prevention\, zero waste approach and even more recycling program in place. Circular Economy Package\, which includes revised legislative proposals on waste to stimulate Europe’s transition towards a circular economy which will boost global competitiveness\, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs. The revised legislative proposals on waste set clear targets for reduction of waste and establish an ambitious and credible long-term path for waste management.  \nThe lecture will focus on the state of the art regarding the waste production globally\, will present the core of circular economy philosophy and how interact with the quality of life.
