Description

Areas of activity :
The Wettability platform includes a goniometer and two tensiometers. These devices characterise the (wetting) ability (hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature) of solid surfaces (plate, fibre, powder) and measure the superficial or interfacial tension of liquid. Measurements of dynamic or static contact angles determine the surface energy of a solid or superficial energy of a liquid. Accessories such as the humidity and temperature controlled chamber, tilt table and ultra-fast camera allow super hydrophobic or absorbent surface characterisation. It is then possible for example to measure the stall angle on super hydrophobic surfaces.

Main equipment (strengths of the Institute) :

The wettability platform is equipped with

  • 1 Krüss DSA100 goniometer,
  • 1 Krüss K100 tensiometer
  • 1 Krüss K12 tensiometer,
  • 1 Krüss K14 tensiometer

Technical description

Goniometer DSA100 - Krüss

Type of measurements :

  • Static and dynamic contact angle (advancing angle and withdrawal) between a liquid and a solid.
  • “Roll-off” stall angle on hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces.
  • Measurement of the surface tension of liquids per hanging drop.
  • Measurement of the liquid interfacial tension – liquid per hanging drop.
  • Temperature measurement and control from 30°C to 400°C.
  • Measurement and control of moisture content.
  • Calculation of the surface energy of the solid.

The goniometer has a camera that can record 200 fps (1200 x 800 pixels), 500 fps (560 x 350 pixels), 800 fps (320 x 200 pixels), 2000 fps (90 x 60 pixels).

Accessories :

  • Temperature (30°C to 70°C) and humidity measuring and control unit.
  • Temperature measuring and control unit (30°C to 400°C)
  • Hooked needles for measuring interfacial tension in two liquid phases.
  • Quartz tank.
  • Tilt table.

The plate can be moved in x, y and z.
