Various nanostructured surfaces found in nature look random at first sight. A closer look, however, frequently reveals that randomness helps to improve useful properties ranging from self-cleaning to anti-reflection. Here, we present several examples of natural surfaces serving as prototypes for nano- and microstructured surfaces. Applications range from structural colors to high performance optical surfaces for solar cells and materials for the cleaning of oil-spills.
