Biodegradability, hemocompatibility, resistance to protein adsorption, and strong interactions with hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based tissues such as dentin, enamel, and bone are important properties of phosphorus-containing biomaterials. Many new phosphonate and bisphosphonate-functionalized poly(b-amino esters) macromers and their network polymers and hydrogels were synthesized for tissue engineering applications. The effects of attaching these groups on degradability, toxicity and binding to tissues of the polymers were investigated. Aiming to exploit the affinity of these groups for dental tissue, they were incorporated into new dimethacrylates for use in self-etching adhesive systems and dental composites ; and their performance was evaluated. Future directions will involve incorporation of these functionalities into photoinitiators to improve their water solubility and biocompatibility.
