Hybrid Carbon Materials

Carbon Materials with Metal-Based Nanoparticles

The team develops hybrid materials that combine a carbon matrix (either porous or non-porous) with metal-based nanoparticles (NPs). By carefully controlling synthesis conditions, it is possible to tailor both the features of the carbon matrix — such as its porosity and surface chemistry — and the characteristics of the metal-based nanoparticles: their chemical nature (metal, metal oxide or non-oxide), their location (within pores, in the pore walls, or on the external carbon surface), particle size and degree of aggregation. These structural and compositional parameters significantly impact the performance of these hybrid systems across a range of applications.

Research Highlights

  • Design and control of carbon/metal hybrid nanocomposites: Precise tailoring of carbon matrices and embedded metallic nanoparticles to tune structural, morphological and chemical features.
  • Understanding synthesis–structure–property relationships: Investigating how synthesis pathways influence nanoparticle dispersion, localization and size, and how these in turn affect functional performance.
  • Application-oriented performance: These hybrid materials are evaluated for their potential in fields such as electrochemical energy storage, supercapacitors and other advanced functional systems.
